Why servicing is essential!

Although many drivers argue that the cost of a service is simply not in their current budget and, since the car doesn’t have any imminent danger signs, they may not be thinking about getting a service. Regular car servicing and maintenance can prevent unnecessary wear and tear; keep it running in optimal condition and save you money in the long run by reducing the risk of costly repairs or breakdowns.

Our vehicle service includes a comprehensive inspection of your vehicle and may require replacement spark plugs, air filters and front wiper blades plus an analysis of the engine management system.
We also add an engine flush treatment to maximise the effectiveness of your oil change and a fuel treatment to help clean the fuel system and improve performance and economy.

We will keep you informed throughout the service and will even stamp your logbook ensuring the vehicle maintains its resale value. Our vehicle service includes:

  • Full safety inspection (72 point)
  • Change engine oil and filter
  • Check brakes
  • Check and top up all fluids

Why are your brakes important?

Brakes are the most important safety feature in your car. One of the easiest ways to tell if they’re working properly is to check your brake warning light. If it’s on, they need attention. That’s simple enough. But what about the less-obvious warning signs? If you experience any of these signs, you should have your brakes checked straight away:

  • Your car loses grip when braking
  • Your car pulls to the left or right when braking
  • Your brake pedal is low, hard, soft or spongy
  • Your steering wheel shudders when you brake
  • Your brakes screech or squeal
  • Your car takes longer to stop than normal

Why are your disc brake callipers important?

When you apply pressure to your brake pedal, this is what happens: the pressure forces brake fluid to engage a series of mechanisms that push the brake pad onto the disc rotor (which is attached to the wheel assembly) bringing your car to a stop. The brake pad is mounted to a brake calliper, which is the part that applies and releases the brake pads from the disc rotor. The calliper comprises a housing, inside which is a piston that moves back and forth when you apply and releases the brakes. Rubber parts inside the calliper ensure that hydraulic fluid does not leak from it.If your vehicle’s callipers have not been overhauled for some time, your AutoTest brakes specialist may recommend this service when replacing brake pads. They’ll always explain the reason why. Although you do not always need to overhaul callipers in axle sets (pairs), doing so can result in more balanced braking and extended brake-pad life.

What makes machining your disc rotors so important?

A disc rotor is the circular metal plate that your brake pad presses against to stop the car. The smoother the surface of the disc rotor, the more efficient the braking. So, when new brake pads are fitted, machining of disc rotors ensures maximum braking efficiency. After thousands of braking applications, disc rotors wear, usually unevenly. For effective braking, new brake pads should fit flush against the disc rotor. That’s why your disc rotors should be machined by a specialist.

Keeping your suspension in top condition is vital to your car’s performance

One main function of your car’s suspension is to provide a smooth ride – even when you’re on bumpy roads. However, your suspension’s most important job is to keep all four tyres in firm contact with the road so that steering, driving, and braking systems are operating effectively. Without your suspension in good working order, control of the vehicle can become unmanageable which can lead to a serious (and fully-avoidable) accident. There are many parts working together to ensure your car’s suspension is doing its job. Shock absorbers (or struts) and springs are the main parts, however, it’s important that other parts, including ball joints, tie rod ends and suspension bushes are in good condition. If any of these parts are worn, your suspension system becomes ineffective and this is very dangerous. For example, just one worn shock absorber means you may need up to 2.6-metres longer to stop the vehicle. That could be the difference between stopping safely or crashing your vehicle. Here is a list of some of the things that can occur when your shock absorbers or struts are worn. If any of these happen to you, it’s time to get them replaced.

  • Car dips forward when braking
  • Tyres show evidence of unusual tread wear
  • Shock absorbers are leaking fluid
  • Car doesn’t handle properly around corners
